A Budget Update Provided by Superintendent De La Vega

A Budget Update Provided by Superintendent De La Vega for March 10, 2009

Like school districts up and down the state, the Ravenswood City School District is adversely affected by the new state budget and its severe reductions in funding to schools.  Despite being one of the world’s largest economies, California is now last in the country in per-pupil funding.

Even with passage of the much-delayed state budget, there continue to be uncertainties.  The new state budget hinges on a positive outcome of the special election on May 19.  There is also uncertainty about the level of funding Ravenswood will receive from the federal stimulus package, which will provide one-time funding over the next two years.

The uncertainties aside, this is now known:  The coming school year (2009-10) and the following year (2010-11) will pose a considerable challenge to the Ravenswood School District.  Across the district, expenses to the general fund must be reduced by $1.8 million in 2009-10.  Our commitment is to keep cuts as far from the classroom as possible, but we know some services and staffing will be affected by the required budget reductions.

However, none of the uncertainties and challenges that lie ahead alters this:

  • Education is the key to success of our students.  Education is the critical equalizer that puts our children’s dreams within reach.  I believe it is the moral imperative of schools and the community to ensure the children of Ravenswood receives the education and skills they need to fulfill their dreams.
  • With the capable, student-driven leadership at the helm, dedicated faculty and professional support staff in the schools, and an engaged, supportive community, the Ravenswood City School District will meet the current challenges head-on.  At the same time, progress will continue to be made in empowering students – through a quality educational program – to make positive choices, to achieve their personal best, and to be productive, responsible members of our society.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions we have received in the last few weeks.  Please write us at comments@ravenswood.k12.ca.us if you have additional questions or comments, and please return to our website often to keep apprised of developments as we work through the current financial challenges.
