Message about Green Oaks
Green Oaks Academy has had an exciting school year, focusing on literacy and working on bringing all children up to grade-level language arts standards. Through grants from the Peninsula Community Foundation, we increased the number of teachers working with struggling readers. These teachers use the Reading Recovery program, an intense one-to-one tutoring program for first grade children who need extra help with reading.
Our fourth year of implementing our English/Spanish dual-immersion program has been exciting. We are delighted to see our students becoming bilingual and biliterate. Our Pacific Islander and African American students are reading, writing, and speaking Spanish, and our Latino students are reading, writing, and speaking English. All students in the program will be fluent in both languages! We are a school community that focuses on parent involvement. We invite parents and community members to join our literacy efforts by volunteering in classrooms, reading with students, and participating in our PTA.
Program Offerings
Our students are fortunate to receive the support services they need. We have a resource specialist, a school psychologist, a speech therapist, a district nurse, an occupational therapist, an afterschool program coordinator, and a positive behavior coordinator, as well as classroom assistants. In addition, we are able to provide our students with counseling on site.
- Special Education Program: Students with moderate to severe learning differences are sometimes entitled to individual education plans and extra attention. Our school has 42 students who qualify for these special education programs. Students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) receive support and services from our education specialist. In addition, they receive specialized services in their general education classrooms. Support teachers and teaching aides collaborate with the classroom teacher to develop modified lessons that adhere to the objectives of a student’s IEP.
- English Learner Program: Most students not yet fluent in English enroll in special classes that help them gain fluency. We strive to advance our English learners into regular classes as soon as possible. Our English Language Development program helps all English learners develop English proficiency in accordance with state standards. These students have equal access to the core curriculum at each grade level and reach high levels of cognitive and academic achievement.
