Message about Flood

We follow the Comer Process, a program designed to improve the educational experience of urban minority youth. We utilize its principles to create a positive school climate by using consensus, collaboration, and no-fault (not blaming others) to run our school. We engage our students in learning through our shared vision, challenging curriculum, positive school community, supportive organizational structure, and proactive community relations.

We provide our students with a foundation in science and technology so that they can succeed in the future. We describe our school with the motto “Where excellence is the standard.”

Program Offerings

We are fortunate to have two Reading Recovery specialists working with first grade students. We also have a resource teacher and speech therapist to work with students from kindergarten through grade eight. We have a school psychologist and counselor whom we share with two other schools, and a part-time occupational and physical therapist.
  • Gifted and Talented Education: Educators identify academically gifted or talented students based on teacher recommendations or tests for inclusion in enrichment programs called Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). Our school has 24 students who qualify for this program.

We provide GATE instruction after school as well as within the regular classrooms. Our focus is the core curriculum, with specific attention on mathematics, science, and reading as well as the integration of technology.
  • Special Education Program: Students with moderate to severe learning differences are sometimes entitled to individual education plans and extra attention. Our school has 13 students who qualify for these special education programs.

We offer a continuum of services to children with disabilities so that they can learn alongside their nondisabled peers in the least restrictive environment. If the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team deems that a modified general education program won’t serve a particular child adequately, we provide that child with special education services.
  • English Learner Program: Most students not yet fluent in English enroll in special classes that help them gain fluency. We strive to advance our English learners into regular classes as soon as possible.

We have an ELD program to help all English learners develop English proficiency. These students have equal access to the core curriculum at each grade level and reach high levels of cognitive and academic achievement.
